Amsterdam, Netherlands Swissotel Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a city built within a network of canals. Here's a typical scene from a bridge over the Singel canal, close to the city center, right near the NH City Centre Hotel.

Just a few blocks away from this peaceful scene are the bustling neighborhoods around Centraal Station and Dam Square. Centraal Station is the hub of Amsterdam's train and trolley network and thus right in the middle of everything. Hotels near Centraal Station include the NH Barbizon Plaza, the Renaissance Amsterdam Hotel, and the Victoria Hotel Amsterdam. A short walk to the south down Damrak Street will bring you to Dam Square, where you can stay at the Swissotel Amsterdam, or the Grand Hotel Krasnopolsky, among others. The neighborhood surrounding Damrak Street on the east, centered around the Oude Kerk (Old Church) includes Amsterdam's famous Red Light District. The Royal Palace is located right at Dam Square, as are a wide array of restaurants and shops.

The Amstel River flows through the center of Amsterdam. The panorama above is from a bridge over the Amstel, in a neighborhood called Muntplein. The Munt is the tall tower visible in the distance. Hotels visible around Muntplein include the Hotel de l'Europe and the NH Hotel Doelen, both of which are visible in this photo. The Rembrandtplein area and the "Golden Bend" of the Amstel are nearby.

Muntplein is near Amsterdam's famous floating flower market, which is shown above (the Munt is the tall tower in the photo as well). Unfortunately the tulips were not in season when we visited in the fall. Springtime is tulip season. If you'd like to stay near the flower market, consider the Jolly Hotel Carlton.

Another lively are of Amsterdam is Leidesplein (shown above), where you can find theater, shopping, restaurants, pubs, and all kinds of entertainment. Hotel selections around Leidesplein include the Amsterdam American Hotel, the Park Hotel, the NH Amsterdam Centre, and the Marriott Amsterdam.

Amsterdam is famous for its art museums, most notably the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. The pano above was shot in between the two (the Rijksmuseum is visible in the photo). The Rijksmuseum is undergoing extensive renovation, however, there are still quite a few Rembrandt's and paintings by other notable Dutch artists on display in the part that remains open. Hotels near Museumplein include the Best Western Museum Hotel, the Hotel Atlas, and the NH Museum Quarter.

Not far from Museumplein is Amsterdam's main park, which is called the Vondelpark. Hotels near this lovely park include the unique Hotel de Filosoof and the Park Plaza Vondel.
