The Big Island of Hawaii
Fairmont Orchid Hawaii
The Big Island of Hawaii is both large and diverse. Many of the hotels are on the Kona side of the island, both around Kailua-Kona town, and on the Kohala Coast, which is north of Kona. Heading north from the airport, there are a number of mega-resorts, including the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, the Kona Village Resort, the Waikoloa Resort, which includes the Hilton Waikoloa Village, and the Waikoloa Beach Marriott; the Mauna Lani Resort, which includes the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel, the Fairmont Orchid Hawaii, and the Mauna Kea Resort, which includes the Mauna Kea Hotel (now closed for renovations to repair earthquake damage) and the Hapuna Beach Prince, along with world class golf, and two of the island's best beaches, shown below.

There are also numerous lodging options right in Kailua-Kona, including the Royal Kona Resort, the Kona Coast Resort, the Royal Sea Cliff Resort, and King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel. Many of the hotels and restaurants are along Ali'i Drive.
If you drive north around the Kohala Volcano to the end of the road, you come to this black sand beach at Polulu Valley. It's a bit of a hike to get down here (and especially back up), but we thought it was worth it.
The Hilo side of the Big Island is much more lush and tropical, and a shorter drive to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Lodging options around Hilo include the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, the Hawaii Naniloa Hotel, the Inn at Kulaniapia, the Hilo Seaside Hotel, and Uncle Billy's Hilo Bay.
Volcanoes National Park is unlike anything you're likely to see anywhere else. Here's a look inside Kilauea Crater:
