The Big Island of Hawaii Mauna Kea Beach Hotel
The Big Island of Hawaii is both large and diverse. Many of the hotels are on the Kona side of the island, both around Kailua-Kona town, and on the Kohala Coast, which is north of Kona. There are numerous lodging options right in Kailua-Kona, including the Royal Kona Resort, the Kona Coast Resort, and King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel. Many of the hotels and restaurants are along Ali'i Drive. Heading north from the airport, there are a number of mega-resorts, including the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, the Kona Village Resort, the Waikoloa Resort, which includes the Hilton Waikoloa Village, and the Waikoloa Beach Marriott; the Mauna Lani Resort, which includes the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel, the Fairmont Orchid Hawaii, and the Mauna Kea Resort, which includes the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and the Hapuna Beach Prince, along with world class golf, and two of the island's best beaches, shown below.
Here's a look at Hapuna Beach:
And here's Mauna Kea Beach:
If you drive north around the Kohala Volcano to the end of the road, you come to this black sand beach at Pololu Valley. It's a bit of a hike to get down here (and especially back up), but we thought it was worth it.
The Hilo side of the Big Island is much more lush and tropical, and a shorter drive to the volcano. Lodging options around Hilo include the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort, the Hilo Seaside Hotel, and Uncle Billy's Hilo Bay. As you're driving along the coast towards Hilo, you'll pass Akaka Falls State Park, and the World Botanical Gardens. Don't miss it!
Volcanoes National Park is unlike anything you're likely to see anywhere else. Here's a look inside Kilauea Crater:
There are lots of great golf courses on the Big Island, here's a look at the famous 3rd hole at Mauna Kea.
