Waikiki Beach, Hawaii The Royal Hawaiian Hotel

Click here for photos, panoramas and hotels in Maui, Kauai, or the Big Island.

Here's a birds-eye view of Waikiki Beach, shot from the Ocean Tower at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. Obviously, the water is fabulous -- nice and warm, with very gentle surf.

It is without question one of the best beaches in the world: you can take surfing lessons, take a ride on a catamaran or an outrigger canoe, or just swim, bodysurf or float around all day, and work on your tan.

The main section of Waikiki, along Kalakaua Avenue, is where most of the action is, and there are dozens of hotels to choose from. From left to right in the pano above, we've got the Royal Hawaiian, the Outrigger Waikiki (don't miss Duke's), the Moana Surfrider, and the Hyatt Regency Waikiki. The Sheraton Waikiki, the Halekulani, the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani, and many others are right nearby. There's plenty of shopping available in central Waikiki, and lots of nearby attractions are easy to get to, including Pearl Harbor, Hanauma Bay, Sea Life Park, and the Polynesian Cultural Center.

When you face the water in Waikiki, Diamond Head will be on your left. As you walk towards Diamond Head, things get a bit less crowded. You can stay away from the crowds, but still conveniently close to everything, check out the Marriott Waikiki Beach, which is across from Kapiolani Park (near the Honolulu Zoo and the Waikiki Aquarium), and the Kahala Hotel and Resort, which is located in the beautiful neighborhood of Kahala, right near the base of Diamond Head.

Venturing down the beach in the other direction from Diamond Head, you'll find Fort De Russy beach, and the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

This section of the beach is usually a little less crowded than the main section of Waikiki. It's a great place to watch the sunset.

Waikiki combines the advantages of a fabulous beach with an incredible diversity of choices of places to stay, restaurants, and nightlife. That combination makes it one of the world's leading destinations.
